The Mengzi is the single most influential philosophy text throughout East Asian history. Providing a method of self-cultivation based on the formulation that human beings are by nature good, Mengzi provides deep insights into the world of politics, economics, and family life. But he reminds us that it is too easy to appear good without authentically being good, and that when the world is disordered and twisted one should be careful to avoid being corrupted by it. Mencius also refutes incorrect philosophies that have become popular today (including philosophies based in materialism, extreme equality, hedonism, and extreme individualism), arguing that the Dao of the ancient kings is the proper way of life.
